Sean Penn, the Cannes Film Festival and stupidity

Sean Penn is back in the news!

1

(Classic Sean Penn, glasses, intense look, the scowl. I miss the days when he used to attack photographers!)

I missed Sean, his ramblings have given me so much entertainment over the years.

He is the president of the jury, the people who decide who gets awards at the festival.

Here are some quotes from Sean about what he wants to see and who should win.

Penn said it was impossible to separate film from politics, and promised that the winning film would be a reflection of the current climate.

“One way or another, when we select the Palme d'Or winner, I think we are going to feel very confident that the film-maker who made the film is very aware of the times in which he or she lives.”

Forgive me if this sounds naive, but I thought a film festival was supposed to base it's awards on the merits of the films as a whole? The acting, directing, sets, music and screenplay, shouldn't these have some bearing on the award? Not according to Sean! And what the hell does this dim wit mean about impossible to separate film from politics? OK Sean, here is some help for you, because it sounds like your in over your head with this. I do understand you may be feeling good at having the word "president" associated with you, but it is for a film festival, in a couple of weeks no one will remember. If Sean is having trouble telling politics from Hollywood, then he truly does believe the roles he plays are real!

And he best quotes are as follows. This is classic Sean Penn!

”I don't have a candidate I'm supporting and I'm certainly interested and excited by the hope that Barack Obama is inspiring,” he said, but went on to accuse him of a “phenomenally inhuman and unconstitutional” voting record.

And continuing on about Obama.

”I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the degree of disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be,” Penn said. “This is the most important election, certainly in my lifetime, and maybe ever.”

I think Sean has some good writers working for him. But he must get confused, forget his lines, something, because "I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the degree of disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be,”  is not a rational or coherent statement! It is very typical of Sean though. I remember hearing him a couple of years ago, and he had trouble stringing together a full sentence! He still does have trouble, but at least he is using a better vocabulary!
